Balding - Hair Loss Causes and Treatment for Women

Holly Clegg by Holly Clegg

Men aren't the only ones who suffer from hair loss; women also experience problems with balding.  Though several causes are the same for women as they are for men, the problem presents differently.  Some women experience a thinning of the hair as they age, which appears to be a form of androgenetic alopecia.  Many causes of hair loss in women are fully reversible, and for the causes that aren't reversible, there are treatments available to maintain the remaining hair.Traction alopecia, hair loss due to the hairs being pulled tight, is usually experienced by women more often than men.  Tight braids and ponytails can cause the hairs to fall out.  If the condition is caught early and the tight hairstyles are discontinued, the hair typically grows back.  A hair loss cause that is unique to women is the hormone fluctuations caused by pregnancy and childbirth.  During pregnancy, all the hair on the woman's body starts to grow, regardless of the individual growth cycles.  This leads to many hairs being shed simultaneously, usually about three months after the baby's birth.  As hormones and growth cycles return to normal, the hair will thicken again and any loss will be completely reversed.  Hair loss in women does not look the same as it does in men.  While men lose all the hair in a given area resulting in a visible bald patch, women experience balding as an overall thinning of the hair.  Malnutrition or eating disorders, which deprive the body of necessary nutrients, can cause balding in women as protein and iron levels are depleted.  When proper nutrition is restored, the hair will grow back.  Women can experience a type of balding similar to male pattern baldness where testosterone levels get too high and attack the hair follicles.  Unlike the localized patches we see on men, women will lose hair from all over the head resulting in greater spaces between individual hairs on the head.  Most of the causes for balding in women are reversible, if not avoidable.  Hair loss due to malnutrition and tight hairstyles can be avoided in the first place.  If they do start, they can be fully reversed as long as they are caught early enough.  Hair loss due to pregnancy and childbirth isn't avoidable, but it does naturally correct itself as time passes.  The loss of hair due to testosterone attacking the follicles will not naturally correct itself.  Women can use Minoxidil and Finasteride to maintain their remaining hair and hopefully grow back hair that was lost, if androgenetic alopecia is determined to be the cause of the hair loss. While men are not the only ones who are affected by balding, it presents itself very differently in women.  Experienced as an overall thinning out of the hair, most of the causes of hair loss in women are completely reversible.  With so much of their sense of identity and attractiveness being associated with hair, it is easy to see why women would be very concerned by the prospect of losing their hair.Visit http://hbconnection.com for more information on where to find doctors or physicians who will be able to assist you with your hair loss.
